Drum Corps News - July 4, 1973 - TROOPS SWEEP 3 IN MIDWEST

Coming off a 3rd place finish on Saturday, June 30th, the Casper Troopers captured successive wins on Sunday, July 1, Monday, July 2, and Tuesday, July 3, in Whitewater, Milwaukee and Racine, Wisconsin.

On Sunday they simply overwhelmed their competition defeating the Kilties by 5.10 pts, scoring 76.80 to the Kilties 71.70, Madison Scouts 68.75, and the De la Salle Oaklands, and Argonne Rebels, each 64.15 the Troopers captured all captions except high horns.

On Monday at the “Big V” Invitational against 11 of the best Midwest and western corps they had a much tougher go of it. Although actually tied by the Santa Clara Vanguard in score at 79.15 because of a penalty to the Vanguard of .1 the Troopers were Declared champions in 3rd place and only 1.45 points from the top were the fast rising powerhouse from La Crosse, Wisc., the Blue Stars with 77.70. The order of finish after the top three were- Racine Kilties, 75.05, Madison Scouts, 72.40, Placienta Kingsmen, 72.20, then a large drop to the Argonne Rebels 65.75, De la Salle Oaklands 65.45, Chicago Cavaliers 63.15. Blue Raeders 62.45 and last and very disappointing to the crowd the Des Plaines Vanguard, 60.40.

High drums went to Santa Clara, High horns to the Blue Stars, High M&M to the Troopers. On Tuesday, July 3rd, in Racine the Troopers broke “80” for the first time in 1973 scoring 80.4O. The Kilties were again second coming up with a 79.00 even before a home town crowd. In third with a 75.55 were The Belleville, III. Black Knights, 4th to the Argonne Rebels 65.35 and 5th and bringing up the rear were the Toronto Optimists with a 61.50.
