From Drum Corps News - 1971 - SANTA CLARA TAKES 3 IN ROCKIES

The 1971 edition of Drums Along the Rockies, a 3 part drum corps spectacular in the Rocky Mountain States of Wyoming and Colorado was completed at Lakewood Colorado’s Jefferson County Stadium on Sunday June 20; The Rockies competition marked a triple victory for the Santa Clara Vanguard and near disaster for the Casper Troopers.

Part I, held in Casper on June 18 saw the Vanguard pull a 2.5 point lead over the Troopers with Madison 1.8 behind the Casper corps. Vanguard scored 79.65; Troopers, 77.15; Madison Scouts, 75.3; Argonne Rebels, 69.85 and the Sky Ryders, 58.20. Argonne took the bugles caption, but it failed to help their overall score.

Friday night indicated that a lot had to be done before any of the competitors were ready to compete with mid-west and eastern units. Saturday night’s competition saw the Vanguard improve to an 80.7 while the Troopers dropped to a 73.6. Madison came up a point and a half to sit not too comfortably in second place with a 76.8. Argonne managed to smooth out some of the rough parts of their show and carried 3rd with a 75.35. Casper bombed into 4th and the Sky Ryders maintained 5th with a 56.6. Corps morale reached an all time low for the Troopers and a record high for the Vanguard. Santa Clara had defeated the Troopers twice in as many shows and were feeling justifiably proud. When the season is over these two corps will have met 16 times and 7.1 points is a rather comfortable lead to carryover last year championship corps. Sunday’s competition before a full house in Jefferson County Stadium brought life back onto the competition. Santa Clara dropped to an 80.05 while the Troopers exploded into second place with a 79.15. The Scouts dropped back into 3rd with a 77.15. Argonne seemed to lose the finesse of the night before and pulled a 70.6. The Sky Ryders in a consistent pattern fell more than 2 points into a 54.45.

Certainly the Drums Along the Rockies competitions was a big feather that fit comfortably in Santa Clara’s cap, one could not help but feel that it was going to be along year for both the Green Machine and F Troop. Neither corps looked or sounded like the champions that they are. A 7 point recovery for the Troopers in only 24 hours appeared more in keeping with the tradition of that corps than did the performance of the Vanguard keep in that tradition.

The Vanguard has won consistently and the Troopers don’t know what victory is. Neither corps is up to par with the east. Neither corps is up to their reputation. The Troopers are consistently superb in M&M. The Vanguard are consistently decent. The Vanguard are consistently decent in all captions. The 10 days or so between Drums Along the Rockies and the July 4 weekend will mean hard work and a lot of sweat. Both corps have a potentially fantastic show. Both corps have the talent.

The outcome of 1971 depends on how much the Troopers improve their G.E. scores and refine their music and how much the Vanguard improves their M&M and perfects their musical performance. Drums Along the Rockies proved a great deal. It proved that everybody involved needs a lot of work. It proved that the Troopers can be beat, even in Casper. It proved that defeat hurts but at the same time is superb motivation. It proved that the Rocky Mountain people dig drum corps.

Drum corps fans can look forward to more competition in the west. Knowing the spirit and desire of drum corps like Santa Clara and the Troopers, fans can look forward to a marked improvement in both corps, presenting a challenge to each other and the leaders in the rest of the country.
