From the 1995 DCI Championship Program:
With “A Copland Canvas”, Troopers paint a musical portrait of one of America’s most beloved composers. But first, the colors of Americana are prepared during a warm-up drill to How the West Was Won. The corps is introduced by a single member of the guard with a white flag, putting a base coat on the canvas prior to the introduction of Copland’s 3rd Symphony, 4th mvt., as fences lock the guard into a corral.
Built around the theme from Fanfare for the Common Man, the movement starts mellow and quickly leads to a dominant percussion feature. Then red flags pop up as the horns re-enter with the majestic main theme. Afterwards, the horns stand still as the guard jumps the fences, automatically changing the flag colors from red to a sun- setting gold. The fences are further utilized through the side-to-side trade- offs between the split horns and percussion, followed by a big ending that moves directly into Appalachian Spring.
The closer quotes solely from the last section of this Copland masterpiece, beginning with a single white flag wiping the canvas spotless so the simplicity of the music can shine through. The full corps then rotates a company front into a big push, out of which emanates a prayer-like chorale. However, something is yet needed to balance out the painting. In the silence remaining while admiring the work of art, the corps’ trademark “sunburst” complete with traditional salute, signs the canvas with an American flag presentation.
