From the 1991 DCI Championship Program:
In the 1975 DCI album liner notes, H. Worth Ake stated, “What Notre Dame is to football, certainly the Casper, Wyoming Troopers have to be to drum corps.” The analogy is well-deserved, but perhaps a bit conservative. Troopers are to drum corps what football, baseball, and basketball all rolled into one are to America. They’re as American as the Fourth of July and yellow ribbons tied ‘round the old oak tree. There is no corps that “says” American with as much pride and history as Troopers.
Once again, to the surprise of nobody, but to the delight of everyone, the Troopers are presenting the music of America, portraying the beliefs and ideals that makes the Troopers’ mystique such a hot commodity. “Cowboys from Sunset” opens the show in typical fashion. Listen carefully and you might hear the coyotes howl. The main theme from the acclaimed miniseries, “Lonesome Dove,” offers a flowing melodic interlude that many believe is the most beautiful piece ever played by the corps.
“Orange Blossom Special” is an old fiddle tune, adapted to the percussion. Selections from the smash-hit movie, “Dances With Wolves,” saturate the air with the reverent spirit of pioneering dignity. The Western-sounding motifs include “John Dunbar Theme,” “Buffalo Hunt” and “Kicking Bird’s Theme.” At the end, “John Dunbar Theme” is played simultaneously with “America the Beautiful.” The corps can rest easy, knowing that this year’s presentation does its part to help keep the Trooper’s mystique alive.
