Drum Corps News - CHARGE!..TROOPERS WIN BATTLE AT CYO INVITE...NATIONAL JUBILEE

LOWELL, Mass., Aug. 24: In the first contest of 1968 involving the cream of both eastern and western corps, at beautiful Cawley Memorial Stadium here, the Troopers of Casper, Wyoming, tonight captured first place and the CYO National Championship title in competition against 13 other major junior corps.

Second was the corps that, other than the Troopers, seemed to enjoy most spectator enthusiasm, the Boston Crusaders. Completing the listing of corps announced in the first five placings were (in order) the Cavaliers, Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights, and the Des Plaines Vanguard.

To this Midwestern reporter seeing corps such as the Crusaders, Golden Knights, St. Lucy’s and Garfield for the first time in almost 2 years, it is obvious that the Boston Crusaders and Golden Knights, in particular, are truly GREAT! Boston has one of the most spectacular, crowd-pleasing and wide-open shows I have seen in years; only a deficit to the Troopers of 1.4 points in field M&M plus a 1 point penalty kept them from taking first.

The Troopers rebounded with a vengeance from their 3rd place finish in the VFW Nationals at Detroit, staging a performance that had members of management teams from many of their rivals virtually conceding them first place. The Cavaliers, who have done far better in recent weeks than earlier this year, again were close enough in performance to seriously threaten the front runners.

Blessed Sacrament, with a highly interesting and unusual drill featuring many difficult diagonal maneuvers and formations plus taking first in G.E. Drumming, distinguished themselves.

Bringing up the rear of the top five whose positions and scores were announced was the Vanguard, badly hurt by taking 10th in G.E. Drumming more than nine points down from Blessed Sacrament. The overall performance of the Vanguard, was not up to the standard of which they are capable and that had been demonstrated earlier.

The boys and girls of the Troopers, one of the most remarkable corps this writer has ever seen, in many respects other than merely what they do on the field, did a job that can be described only as great. There is little points in alibis or complaints from others, They did the job and they deserved to win. Their entire mode of operation, their field show, their uniforms, history, tradition, and advance buildup..... in short their “exitability”, and smooth, professional performance leaves one with the firm impression that, on an overall basis, the Troopers have proven themselves to be nothing less than THE corps of the year! To Jim Jones and his great staff, to their wonderful kids, to the city of Casper and the support they lend to the Troopers. one can say only “Congratulations! You are really IT!
