A Personal Remembrance

by Walt Heath

Most memorable show I can think of from my era besides winning 1965 World Open was the VFW Nationals in the same year. The show was in McCormack Place in Chicago - an indoor venue. If I remember right it was supposed to be at Soldier Field but the weather was too crummy or something. Anyway it was all indoors but there wasn’t any seating because it was just a convention center and the crowd was standing all around the performance area. Surprisingly the echo wasn’t as big a problem as we thought it was going to be and it made us sound three times as big as normal. And the smooth marching surface made the drill super machine-like (you probably couldn’t perform today’s shows with the dancing, etc. without a lot of people falling down on the slickness). Anyway we came in fourth, our highest placement ever in a major competition up to that time. So who won? The Royal Airs from Chicago, a great corps that didn’t last too long after that. Longevity - not many corps have been around longer than the Troopers and we obviously have the tales to prove it!

The corps was also staying at the National Guard Armory on the south side of Chicago at the time. Next thing we knew after settling in, the Guard was being mobilized because of some rioting in Chicago (the days of Civil Rights unrest - history just kind of happening around us as it tends to do in the life of our Corps). We stayed put though, amazingly enough. Nobody made us leave and we just tried to stay out of the way of the soldiers and work through all the distractions to get ready for the big competition at hand. Trooper spirit!
