A Personal Remembrance
by Sean McRactagan (Troopers Fan!)
In 1963, I was on a four day pass from Camp Pendleton, Cal, awaiting orders to Vietnam. Some friends of mine who were with the USMC D&B Corps decided to go to the VFW Nationals. As a transplanted Archer-Epler Musketeer, I wanted one last look at some Drum Corps before shipping out.
I wasn’t just pleasantly surprised, I was overwhelmed when the Troopers took the field. All we could ask each other was “where in the name of #$%^ did these kids come from?” I had always liked Garfield, but that changed that day. With little or no competition to improve their performance, the Troopers stood up to the best in the country, and in my opinion, didn’t have to bow their heads to anyone, I thought they did a better job than the Cavies. They performed like nothing I had ever seen in a new Corps. (And I was M&M inst. for the Ridley Park Rangers, in Pa, and for the Anaheim Scouts.) And the horn line blew me away. What a treat.
My hat was off that day to whomever taught that wagon wheel maneuver that made me a Trooper fan for life.
Thanks for the memories!
